Ultrasonography
Ultrasound is widely used in lameness investigations to evaluate soft tissues such as tendons and ligaments, as well as bone surfaces (the internal structure of bone is evaluated with radiography).
We also use ultrasound for the evaluation of the abdomen in horses with colic, urinary tract disease or weight loss/diarrhoea.
Ultrasound is also invaluable for fertility work. It is used to scan mares to see if they are in foal (including identifying twins) as well as evaluating ovaries to determine the best time to cover a mare.
We have several scanners within the practice, some of which can be used on yards, for fertility work and basic tendon scanning. We also have a larger, non portable machine at the Breadstone clinic which produces high resolution images. This is used for more detailed scanning during lameness investigations and abdominal scanning.
